RFID Implant (with video!)

Well, my "implanter" from Jecta arrived this morning after I called them yesterday to find out where it was... apparently they didn't get my fax so assumed I had changed my mind.

Went around the shops in town earlier today but none of the three big-name chemists had any alcohol wipes... I even tried the Tattoo place at the top of our road but they wouldn't give or sell me any (I assume they were running low as I can't think of any way to "misuse" alcohol wipes!!!).

Luckily needler found some in with her piercing stuff so this evening we sat down at our dining-room table and I got my RFID implant :)

  • low-res MPEG4

  • (To view the videos, use Quicktime or VideoLAN... it may work in others such as Windows Media Player but I haven't tried it).

    I'm happy to report that both patient and chip are doing fine thanks to the excellent Dr needler

    Update: To answer some questions and point some things out...

    1. I noticed that, on the video, it sounds like I'm talking needler through the procedure like we didn't have a clue what we were doing... in reality, I'm just waffling on because I'm nervous and we'd actually talked the procedure over a dozen times beforehand.

    2. I had to fax/e-mail a waiver to Jecta before they would send me the animal implanter.

    3. The implanter came with a chip but I used my own EM4102 chip because it's the cheapest and most widely available system, maybe in future I'll go for a read/write hitag solution

    4. It would be difficult to scan the chip from a distance due to the size of the antenna... so people won't be tracking me as I move about.

    5. The implant is actually made of glass, bioglass to be precise, here is a photo of an identical chip.

    6. Yes, really... glass... and no, it won't break inside my arm, I tried breaking one and in the end I had to smack it with the handle of my leatherman multiple times, then pull it apart with pliers... basically, something Very Bad would have to happen to my arm in order to break the implant, something so bad that I'd have more than just broken glass to worry about. here is a photo of the broken implant.

    No on WMP. No on VLC pre 0.8.2 (Win32).

    not as much as it's going to hurt when I take the plaster off... curse my hairy man-arms!!!!

    You can feel the needle going in, and you can feel the plunger pushing the chip in... but it doesn't really hurt because of the huge adrenaline rush and the fact that... well.. it just doesn't actually hurt that much (the needle is shaped in such a way that it creates a tiny slit and opens it up rather than jamming a big hole in the skin).

    Now, I wonder if I can use your RFID to my advantage ;)

    BTW ... you're not going to set off the alarms in shops are you?

    2. Not really, it would be stupid of me to use it for any serious security application and the range is so small you'd need to be using an extremely expensive scanner or pretty much holding my hand to read the chip

    I'm showing my lack of knowledge in this area, but what is there to stop it moving around under the skin?

    The following is based on googling, I am not a doctor :)

    Well, it's not exactly hollow under there y'know.. it'll be embedded in all kinds of fleshy material... it MAY migrate to somewhere my body is slightly more comfortable with it but only by a few millimeters.

    It's also made of Bioglass which was designed as a synthetic bone graft which is why placement is so important. If the chip is resting on some bone it may fuse with it... which would be bad... it's not deep enough to be touching bone where it is now and hopefully if it migrates it will migrate outwards instead of inwards.

    At the moment, removing it would involve cutting into my arm and squeezing the chip out.

    It may have also been covered in Biobond, which encourages cells to grow into it like a mesh... which would make removal a complete pain (literally).

    Either way, if I wanted to remove it I would need to see a professional.

    A few questions:

    1) What happened to the idea of you putting it in your thumb webbing? I'd have thought that would be in a more 'convenient' position than your wrist?

    2) gonna submit it to BME with a write up?

    1) I thought about positioning long and hard... and I thought about where I'm going to use it most (door entry) and figured that all the readers are on my right-hand side but I'll usually be carrying a bag in my right hand so with it in my left wrist I can just reach across and swipe my wrist without putting bags down... I could have had it in my left thumb webbing but I really don't like the idea of putting pressure on it when I'm carrying stuff (Amal mentioned he was carrying servers a few hours after his implant but still, that doesn't sound good).

    2) Yeah, maybe.

    A random question, perhaps, but are you the guy I've been told about who can pass through Oyster gates on the Tube having had an RFID implant?

    Oyster uses 13.56MHz tags. These are hard (or impossible) to find in implantable form and that frequency doesn't travel through skin very well.

    Most, if not all, implants you see around are 125kHz which is widely used in animal tagging and thus cheap and affordable :)
